Don't miss the apple studel with creme sauce at the cafe to the right as you are looking at McDonald's in the center of Garmisch.. Bob |

Carl, Depending on weather, you can certainly walk from the train station in Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the Edelweiss, (roughly 1 hour walk) or take the bus for about 2 Euro. It is not that bad of a walk which I did in winter with 2 children in tote. Edelweiss is a nice American Hotel, but you can certainly save money by staying on the economy, or in the Nato housing at Oberramagau, which is where the play is anyways. Garmisch is one of my favorite spots. It is very easy to get around in Germany with public transportation. |

When you are in Garmisch, there is a lovely gorge called Partnach-Klamm (if I remember correctly) to walk through. It is right on the edge of town and we have done it in summer and in winter. Not too strenuous. I just wore tennis shoes. Also, the neighboring town of Mittenwald, a few miles south, is a good place to get away from so many tourists and still have great views and lots of Bavarian charm. Violin-making town. |

Oops . . . I went back and checked my information, and I erred. The S-Bahn lines in from the airport are S-1 and S-8. I was in error when I posted S-2. |

Carl, I just checked the DB trip planner, and it looks as if there is a direct train link (without any changes) from Munich Hbf to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and the fare quoted was 18 Euros. Munich's airport is nowhere near the center of town, but there are 2 S-Bahn lines that you may take from the airport into the Hbf. I'm not sure which of the two is preferable for that trip. The lines are the S-2 and the S-8, and the S-2 might be the choice to make, though I am not sure. Once you get to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, you probably should take a taxi from the station to the Lodge. My recollection is that the ride will be less than 10 Euros. If you want to get around town in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, there are city buses. Go out the main gate of the Lodge, go to your left to the main street, then to your right a short distance to the bus stop. A day pass for the city bus is 3 Euros per person. Each bus stop has a diagram showing the bus routes. Here is the DB web site, for trip planning: http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en |

My wife and I are going to the EL for the passion play and hopefully the Oktoberfest. I realize I'm early but I wanted to get this in before the site changes. Getting to the EL by train, is it difficult and is the train station near the airport in Munich? Would I be wiser to rent a car to get from the airport to EL,as we will be in the area for 9 days? The lodge mentioned they have transportation to Oktoberfest, should we purchase a ticket for a table seat? Anyone have any don't miss sites? Thank Carl |
