* Europe Traveler Another sure sign that we are leaving winter behind -- many airlines start flying according to their summer schedules on March 28, the same day we change our clocks forward to daylight-saving time. Do you plan to jet off to a fabulous European destination this summer? If so, it’s time to get cracking on your planning and booking, particularly if you will be depending on a budget airline to take you there. Budget airlines’ routes get laid on and then unceremoniously canceled as dictated by demand, so check the press announcements on the home pages of either your favorite budget carrier or the airport from which you generally fly every couple of months or so -- who’d want to miss out on a vacation to an as-yet-undiscovered Greek island, should one be offered for a song? From Germany Over the past few months, Ryanair has announced several new routes out of Frankfurt-Hahn. Travelers can now add the following destinations to their list of potential places to visit: Ibiza, Spain (Monday, Wednesday, Friday); Kos, Greece (Thursday, Sunday); Volos, Greece (Thursday, Sunday); Agadir, Morocco (Wednesday, Saturday); Pula, Croatia (Monday, Thursday); and Lleida, Spain (Friday, Sunday). If Bulgaria’s a place you’ve always been curious about, Wizz Air has laid on a flight from Frankfurt-Hahn to the capital city of Sofia on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. If your airport of choice is Weeze/Düsseldorf, Wizz Air will whisk you to Bucharest or Cluj-Napoca, Romania twice weekly, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, or to Katowice, Poland 4 times a week (Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday) as of June. A travel company by the name of Sunweb will begin offering charter flights out of Weeze at the end of April, jetting you off to the Greek islands of Rhodes (Thursday), Kefalonia (Tuesday), Lefkas /Preveza (Tuesday) and Zakynthos (Monday). Ryanair, meanwhile, has added flights to Lappeenranta, Finland (Thursday and Sunday), a city near the Russian border, as of March, and will add Trieste, Italy (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday) to its route plan from May and Zaragoza, Spain (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday) from July. From Düsseldorf International, Air Berlin has just laid on a flight to Tel Aviv. It travels this route on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Germania, meanwhile, will carry you back and forth to Beirut (departing Düsseldorf on Thursdays, with return flights on Fridays). For those in the Stuttgart area, Italy just got a little closer. Air Berlin will fly to Florence every day of the week as of March 2010. You will also be able to hop a plane to the Adriatic coast city of Rimini and back on Sunday as of May. Rounding out the selection of new Italian destinations is a daily flight to Milan. Meanwhile, Condor plans to add the Moroccan city of Agadir to its list of destinations from Stuttgart. If the Karlsruhe/Baden-Airpark is easily reachable from your home, you may be pleased to learn that Ryanair will now be flying from there to Bari, Italy, (Wednesday and Sunday), Porto, Portugal, (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday) and Trapani, Sicily, (Monday and Friday). The Nuremberg airport has added new destinations for the summer of 2010 as well. Air Berlin has added nonstop flights to Greece’s Araxos (Tuesday) and Kalamata (Thursday), as well as Heringsdorf, on the Baltic island of Usedom (Saturday). The airport’s summer route plan will also offer Rome, Milan, Venice, Nice, Split and Istanbul. The Allgäu Airport in Memmingen will this summer serve as the departure point for Air Italy charter flights to Naples on Sundays from April 4 to June 20 and Sept. 5 to Nov. 7. For details, see www.amos-reisen.de. The Cologne-Bonn Airport has also announced happy news concerning new routes. From the end of March, Germanwings will fly to Tel Aviv on Tuesdays and Saturdays; it will also begin routes from Sundays through Fridays to Copenhagen and Madrid. Another new destination is Santorini, Greece, with flights on Saturdays only. The airline will also offer weekly flights to Calvi in Corsica, and Fuerteventura and Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Welcome Air will begin routes to Graz and Innsbruck, Austria, as of March (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays). Wish to venture even farther afield? Cairo, Egypt is now yours twice per week with Air Berlin. From Italy If Venice Treviso makes a convenient departure airport for you, you can now use Wizz Air to whisk you off to Lviv, Ukraine, on Mondays and Fridays as of May 14. Since October 2009, Venice Treviso has also served as a starting point for trips to Kiev, Ukraine’s beautiful capital 5 times a week. Or how about Warsaw, Poland? You can fly there three times weekly, on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, as of April. Those near Pisa will find their horizons expanded by the addition of routes to Cluj-Napoca, Romania, and Bucharest as of June and Budapest as of July. These flights are scheduled for Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and are all operated by Wizz Air. For a real summer treat, as of May, Ryanair will whisk you off to the Greek island of Rhodes (Mondays and Saturdays). For those with Russia on the mind, Wind Jet has recently announced new routes from Pisa to Moscow (Sundays only) and St. Petersburg (Saturdays only). If you call Naples home, as of April, you will be able to hop a flight up to Copenhagen on Transavia on any Sunday, Tuesday or Friday of the week. Air Italy will begin to operate frequent routes to Bergamo, Palermo, Olbia and Nice in accordance with a new schedule it will roll out between May and August. From Belgium Jetairfly has announced six new destinations from the Brussels South Charleroi Airport for the summer of 2010, including Al Hoceima, Morocco, Tangiers, Istanbul, Antalya, Iraklion and Rhodes. Ryanair will add a new route to Fuerteventura at the end of March, coursing the skies twice weekly, on Wednesdays and Sundays. And as of June 11, FlyOnAir will reopen its routes to Pescara, Italy, and Catania in Sicily, offered on Sunday and Friday. From the UK Oh, to have London Stansted airport in your own back yard! Your winged blessings are many-fold. To begin, easyJet will lay on new routes to Bodrum (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday) and Dalaman, Turkey, (Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday) as well as Dubrovnik (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday) and Split, Croatia, (Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday). The airline has also recently announced new flights to Fuerteventura (Wednesdays and Saturday) and Cagliari in Sardinia (daily). Not to be outdone, Ryanair will begin routes to Fuerteventura (Sunday and Wednesday), Fez (Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday) and Figari, Corsica (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday). The lesser known Pegasus Airlines will launch direct flights to Bodrum (Thursday and Sunday); Dalaman and Antalya will also be within reach, but with connections in Istanbul.
