I've lived in the Scott AFB area since July 09 and the rental car concession in the AAFES mini-mall at Scott has always been Hertz. Granted that info is only for the last six months. Don't know how long Hertz has been at that location.

I can verify what Chris has said about the service there. I've rented a couple times for weekend trips to Ohio and Troy has been great.

BTW, great weekend rates I found online at Hertz.com
$49 for a mid-size car, Friday-Monday rental.

I think that the Hertz concession at the BX is fairly recent - the Military Living Space-A guide showed Enterprise as having the deal. We were *very* pleased with the Hertz service rep this week. Troy took the time to answer lots of questions, especially about our one-way Scott - Andrews rental. He said he'd been there about a year.

I am not sure as of now but for sometime in the past that was my experience at Scott.

In August of 2008, we flew from Hickam to Memphis. At Memphis we got a Hertz one-way rental back to our car at Scott. But we had to turn the rental car in at the St. Louis airport. So, is Hertz at Scott a somewhat recent thing?

We contacted Avis (Fairview Heights) who told us we would have to find our way there. Their agent explained that there are taxis we could get. Enterprise picked us up and put us in a new Impala at a reasonable rate. Turned it in for the ride home to Andrews, and didn't get out of Scott. Toughed it out (schlepped our lightweight (!) luggage back to the Inn) then got skunked again at the Pax Terminal. Enterprise had nothing, so we called Hertz, 618-744-9731 (in the AAFES lobby) and Troy picked us up with a car for a day. Turned it in the next morning and tried again to fly out - plane overflew, so we decided to bite the bullet and drive back to Andrews. Troy at Hertz was most helpful and set us up with a one-way rental back to Andrews. Great service, very competitive pricing, happy customer here.

Bottom line right now - we were happy with Enterprise - they picked us up at Shiloh gate. We were very happy with Hertz because they picked us up at the Pax terminal. Avis was a non-starter because we could not get to their place several miles away.

OK, Jack, I stand corrected. Fairview Hgts is definitely WEST of Scott.

BTW, the "approximate" distance between Fairview Hgts and Scott AFB appears to be about 10 miles in a straight line. Of course highways do not always travel in straight lines. I arrived at the 10 mile distance by using Google Earth and measuring the distance (in a straight line) between the two locations.

Howard, I do not know your destination. You may be wanting a rental car to just explore the area around Scott AFB, then turn in the car locally so you can catch a hop out of Scott. If so, a rental car would be a good choice. However, if you plan on getting to Scott and then renting a car to drive WEST out of the Scott area, remember that the Metrolink light rail system can take you very cheaply from Scott AFB all the way to Lambert International Airport in St Louis. All major rental car offices are located at that airport as well, so you might want to check out the prices at BOTH locations: Scott AFB area and the St Louis airport.

Danny,

Well now I have to nit-pick. Regardless of where the off base car rental agencies are, according to mapquest, Fairview Heights is 14.78 miles and
Belleville is 9.16 miles.... both WEST of the base...

Howard,
Hertz, 618-744-9731, is located inside the PX at Scott AFB. Their hours are M-F 0800-1730, S 0800-1300, and closed on Sundays. Enterprise rental is located in a strip mall just outside the Shiloh gate which is at the north end of the base and is also the main gate. Enterprise also has an office in O'Fallon.

Surely Mike meant "FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS", IL instead of "FAIRFIELD", IL. Fairview Heights is approximately 10 miles east of Scott AFB.

A Google search showed TWO on base car rental offices: Enterprise and Hertz.

There are two Fairfields in IL. One is approx 108 miles due east of Scott, the other is 315 miles NE up by the WI border. That sure isn't what I'd call a 'nearest' rental agency. :-))

But seriously, I presume you meant downtown in Belleville.

As of 15 months ago there was an Enterprise desk in the BX that was open during normal working hours. The nearest off-base rental agency was in Fairfield (?) with no pick-up.
