Some people may not be aware that rental auto agencies both in the U.S. and abroad often are required to pay additional taxes for operating at airports and trains stations and these are, of course, passed along to the clients. It's often less expensive, if somewhat less convenient, to rent from other locations, especially if they'll pick you up.

This does not apply to military installations.

Cherry,

I went to www.enterprise.com and checked each location for the same date and car type. I've found that with Enterprise, the rate quoted is what you pay.

I just checked again and found that the rates have changed.
Airport is now $152.30 (was $150.14)
Pearl is now $214.08 (was $266.43)
K-Bay is now $187.90 (was $214.08)

A few years ago when doing research on car rentals on base at Andrews or nearby (for people in a group coming in for a protest), I learned that the on-base rental agencies will have a "government rate" contract that often is much higher than if you ask for the civilian rate and/or a discount. Those car rental places on base are primarily for the convenience of people traveling on goverment orders, who will be reimbursed at the official contract rate, so they are not bargaining for a discount the way we 'leisure' travelers do.

This might help explain some of the disparity between the rates Bill found quoted on base and those available off base? (I also wonder if those airport rates included all the add-on charges that are typical when renting AT an airport? Bill, did you press them on that subject? I ask because sometimes the quoted rate magically blossoms into something much greater when a person actually arrives at the counter to pick up the reserved car!)

I'm at Hickam now. I rented a car at HNL last week for 4 days via Priceline for $14 per day. (Alamo)

If price is an overriding consideration on deciding the car rental agency to engage,it is best to check several and compare prices.

There are no savings at any of the Enterprise locations at K-Bay or Pearl. The airport is cheaper.

An Economy car for 23-30 Jan with no discounts goes for:
Pearl $266.43
K-Bay $214.08
Airport $$150.14

They are really looking out for the servicemen and women aren't they? Or maybe I'm reading it wrong?

Thanks Phyllis & Mike. I checked out the web site and was hoping to get in on Enterprise's 50% discounted week-end special. Unfortunately, it's only available in town and not at the on-base location. Something wrong with this picture I'd say!

Does anyone know which on-base rental car company currently serves MCAS Kaneohe Bay? A phone number would be especially helpful.
