Take the Travis Shuttle bus across the street from the Travis Inn. Ask the driver for transfers to the Del Norte BART stn. Transfer to the #8 at Huntington and Walters and then #90 at the Fairfield Transportation Center. The BART goes to both SFO and Oakland Int. Total cost to OAK about $7.50 and quicker than taxi. I departed Travis Inn at 0710 and arrived OAK 0955

OOOoops! Below I mistakenly quoted the wrong section of the regs. (I was looking up info for two different topics at the same time. Apparently I can NOT walk and chew gum at the same time!)

The rules that apply to Laura and other Cat V's are found at C.1.3.4 on page 25 of the AMC regs.

Laura, as I hope you already know, you are not forced to go only as far as Travis. Instead, as a Cat. V, you are allowed to be manifested to the last stop the aircraft will make, as long as the flight is all part of the same mission. (This is explicitly stated in the space-a regs, page 80, section C.6.1.8.2. Link via John D's space-a page at upper left.)

Quite a few flights from Hickam do NOT go only to Travis. On separate occasions I personally have flown (with my sponsor) nonstop all the way to Ohio and then later all the way to South Carolina on my way back to the east coast (DC area).

What is your ultimate destination -- that is, WHERE on "the east coast" because that may make a difference in the advice we give you.

If you do not have time constraints (that is, you can go home at night and repack for the next try), and don't mind waiting for several days at the terminal while you entertain your children, consider "holding out" for such a flight. It could save you a lot of time and a lot of money.

An in-person visit to the terminal by you -- or better yet, your husband -- is likely to get you some useful information about upcoming flights way beyond the short-term. They will tell you details in person that they will not give over the phone, especially if you are friendly and patient and come at a time when they are not too busy.

Laura: Hickam does have flights directly to McGuire AFB, NJ. If you fly into Travis I would call Stan who will take you to either airport for a reasonable fee. Stan number is available at the Travis terminal. If I had to select an airport to fly out of, I would select Sacramento over San Francisco or Oakland because it is a lot easier driving to Sacramento vs the other two. Happy Travels

Laura,

If you make up your mind which one you want to go to in enough time to give some reasonable reservation time, try Eagle Transport shuttle service. We used him from Sacramento to Travis for $70. Eagle Transport/David E Brodsky/707 580-4556

Southwest flies out of both Sacramento and Oakland. It's a toss-up but I'd go with Oakland mainly because it gives you the option of looking for flights out of San Francisco too. If you arrive in the middle of the night, a cab from Travis to Oakland costs about $120. Ouch, but I did it. Getting from Oakland to SF can add up, too. There's no right answer on this one.

Hello Laura,
You do have a third choice, Oakland. I think it would depend on where you are flying to on the East coast. I think your best bet would be to use google and find out which airlines serve the city you want to fly to. Good luck and happy travels.

I live in Hawai'i and as a category 5 I can go as far as Travis AFB, I want to catch a plane going to the East coast, but I don't now from which city to depart, they're both almost the same distance and I don't want to pay a lot of money getting to the airport or spending the night there, I'm traveling with 2 little ones so I need the best route, any advice is welcome.
Thanks!!
