I echo Neal's recommendation of Skype. I"ve used it throughout Europe to call for Flight info at Ramstein (or Spandg, etc.) in planning my return to a base or to temp lodging for a reservation. It's virtually flawless and it's cheap as dirt to use.

if you are able to take a Netbook or laptop Skype is great. $.02 per minute anywhere in the world. Internet is available almost anywhere.

John, I have an AT&T phone and it works in Europe but at something like $1.75 a minute or more... You might check your cell phone company and ask them about your phone's capabilities and charges. Texting is much cheaper if you can do what you want by that method. Bob

we are planning to go to edelweiss.

Ques: how do we get there from ramstein? we do not want to rent a car.
Ans: Train

Ques: can we use our cell phone in germany?
Ans: If it is an "unlocked" multi-band GSM so that you can put in a chip purchased for Germany... yes. If not...no.

If there's interest in a rental car, I've use both Avis and Hertz(both have key drop boxes in the Ramstein Terminal on departure).. I'd look up their costs on their web sites(1 way and also roundtrip). I assume both have offices in Garmisch but not sure. Bob

I understand that Euro-car allows one way rentals anywhere in Germany without a drop off charge. Last year we caught a rare flight from Rota to Cheveries Belgium. We were able to catch a ride with an Air force Sgt in his pick up truck to Mons Belgium. We were able to rent a "German car" which meant a car assigned to Germany that needed to be returned to Germany. We turned it in in Garmisch and rented a Hertz car and turned it in at Ramstein. Hertz has a drop box in the terminal as Eurocar does not. Be aware that if you go into Austria with the rental car you need to buy the vignette (sticker) to keep the Austrian tax man happy. I would also check with Hertz about their rates. Try the Charter CDP. 650209

Does anyone know if I can get a rental car one-way from Ramstein to Garmisch, and how much it might be?

I'd go to Garmisch by train using a Laenderkarte. It's relatively slow, but very flexible and very cheap. All 5 of you could get to Garmisch for about 60 Euro. The thing I like about traveling that way is that everyone can sleep, stretch the legs, and use the restroom without having to stop. Go to www.bahn.de for details and trip planning.
Once you're in Garmisch you could rent a car from Europecar. The office is just 1 block from the train station.

Faith,

How long do you plan to stay at Garmisch? - a week? More?

Do you plan to return to Ramstein?

If you are spending a week at Garmisch and plan to return through Ramstein then a car may be "best" for you.

We enjoyed having a rental car. It is about a 45 minute drive to Innsbruck Austria. Fun to go park and walk around the old part of town. On Sat people come to the city hall to get married. The police dept band was playing a concert out in the street out side of city hall. Just east of Innsbruck in Wattens where Savorski (spelling?) crystal is made. There is a real neat museum and store(Bring lots of $$$). We found a car very handy. E mail me if I can offer any other help.

My husband will be on Reserve-Active Duty Leave. He wants to go to Germany. Family of five (3 teenage boys). 7 to 10 days. Money not a major factor to a point. Just going to take in what we can. Take some tours and try to get back in time for me to get to back to work. My husband does have a bad knee for getting around. He is very just lets go and take a chance, I want a plan.

Faith,

Need a little more info from you to determine the "Best" way.

1. How many are traveling with you - two? more?

2. Is money a major factor?

3. How long will it be before you return to Ramstein (or are you returning?).

4. What do you plan to do at Garmisch - do you want a car to get around?
