Hi everybody, this is Annemarie of Charter US, and I am writing today after some research in reference to all of your concerns about buying additional insurance for a car rental in Europe or to rely on your Credit Card coverage and skip this purchase. Here is what I found: 1: Credit card companies only cover you, if you do not purchase additional insurance and use their card for this transaction of rental. (Well, that makes sense...) 2: It is highly recommended to call the customer service No. of the CC you intend to use and ask questions about their coverage before you make any reservation. Do not forget to ask them about every detail of coverage including "loss of use" issues of the rental car (while being repaired). Also ask about damages due to natures acts of will, such as hail, floods etc. 3: Also make sure you ask them about their stipulations concerning c0-drivers. For example Charter US offers additional drivers "free of charge" but you need to find out how your CC will handle this in case something happens while you yourself are not driving. The way I understand it their insurance is part of the bill but it has a deductible of 1000euro or 500euro for window and tire damage. Hopefully your credit card will cover the deductible. If not I guess it is out of pocket. |

Charles, I know the insurance included with the rental company we use in Ireland does not cover windshield damage which may also apply to the AMCR insurance. However, maybe somehow the windshield coverage was covered through the Platinum MC coverage? Just guessing! |

I started renting from Elvira at AMCREurope when they opened in 2004 and have been more than happy with the staff, the contract, prices, and cars. In other words, they are simply grand to deal with. There has never been a nagging in the back of mind that something wasn't right. In fact, I will rent from them again in late May. It is mandatory to purchase their insurance opposed to letting it ride on your platinum credit card. |

I also rented from AMCR with a USAA Platinum MC and got a rock damage requiring total windsheild replacement. USAA paid claim w/o any hassle, and AMCR was patient in awaiting the issue resolution, which took nearly six weeeks as documentation was furnished. No up-front costs to me, so we were both happy with outcome. |

I have rented from AMCR several time and completely satified with them. They really go out of the way to help. The last trip they sent someone over to give us a ride from the shell station. The insurance they provide does have a deductable. I had a chip in a windshield and it cost 383 EUR to have it replaced. I have American express premium car rental insurance and it covered that. |

After renting from AMCR at Ramstein last Fall I think I have to agree with Wayne. I started a paralell post "Rental Car Gotchas" on this topic and am beginning to believe I was very lucky in my past 30+ trips to Europe when I elected to waive the CDW insurance. I just think with all of the ways you can get "skinned" by the rental companies it pays to take the AMCR way. I reiterate what I said in my "gotcha" post...read the fine print and ask plenty of questions before signing the agreement. |

Save all the hassle and worry by renting from AMCR Europe. Their rentals include insurance. Great folks to work with and they do go the extra mile. |

I figured the previous "Hanging Around Ramstein Post" was starting to sidetrack in to rental coverage so I started a new thread. Here is the link from the USAA website to the benefits for my Platinum Mastercard. https://content.usaa.com/mcontent/static_assets/Media/MCGuideandUSAAPlatMC.pdf?c acheid=1701898386 It clearly states that I am covered in Germany for rentals of less than 15 days. This coverage also includes loss-of-use to the rental car company. It does say that coverage is secondary to any other insurance that is available. There is a rider on the end that says platinum card holders have a 16 day extension on coverage out to 31 days total. It also lists phone numbers to both USAA Card Services and The MasterRental Insurance customer service line. I've always taken it for granted that I was covered based on this information and have never specifically called to inquire. I will tomorrow and hopefully I won't find out I've just been lucky all this time never to have had a claim. In any event I suspect that based on the required documentation to substantiate a claim, I may have to pay up front and be reimbursed by Mastercard. That may make the point mute for many people. |
