Thanks again to everyone. For the rest of the story........... We met a couple also needing to go to Scott at 10pm. The 4 of us split the cab fare from LF to long term parking at Scott. I picked up my auto and made it to the Scott Inn before midnight. The key to our situation was the late arrival. I am so thankful my car started after sitting out in freezing temps for 6 weeks.

Happy Travels.... Phil

"Greyhound bus terminal in Saint Louis to Scott Airforce Base"

Walk out the Greyhound front door, down the ramp, across the tracks to the MetroLink ticket vending machine. Buy your ticket, walk back up to the platform and stand under the sign which says Scott-Shiloh.

Trip takes about 45 minutes; Scott will be the last stop. Get off, walk across the tracks over to the turnstiles, put your ID card in the little slot in the wall, push the button and wait to be buzzed in. If it's during normal duty hours M-F, you can catch the 21 bus (not 21X) on the other side of the turnstiles about every 20 minutes. Last one leaves at 1741 hrs. Can't remember if the MetroLink ticket serves as a free transfer to the bus. ....you might need to pay an extra 50 cents when you get your ticket from the machine. Anyway, the bus will take you by billeting and the PAX terminal. After hours, it's about a 3/4 mile walk, mostly flat.

Philip,
The Metro is the way to go to/from Lambert Airport. http://www.metrostlouis.org/

Lambert is the last stop going west on the Red Line. Shiloh Scott is the last stop going east on the Red Line. So it very easy to ride the Metro from the airport. Just go to the airport metro and hop on the next departing train (buy your ticket first from the machine). All trains leaving will be headed to Shiloh Scott. Its impossible to get on the wrong train!

You said your arrive at 2130 on Monday. If you don't have to stay at an airport hotel, maybe catch the train to Scott and stay in billeting? The last train departing the airport metro going all the way to Scott departs at 2308.

Takes about 1:15 and cost $3.75. Reduced fare ($1.85) for those over 65, but I think you need a special "Metro Reduced Fare Permit" in order to use this fare. Good Luck

A quick check via Google came up with this:

http://www.usostl.org/airport-facility

"Sleeping area with twin beds and wake up service"

Didn't say if it is free or if there is a charge for this sevice....nor if there are more than one set of twin beds.

Rebecca, thanks for this USO tip. I'm leaving for Scott within the hour and will take a look if I'm able.

Philip,

FYI, we ran into a SPAT at the terminal at Scott last month, and he relayed that the USO at Lambert had just completed a multi-million dollar remodel, and that overnight sleeping accomodations are available. Might be worth looking into.

"recommendations of cheap but clean and bug free motels"

What....you want a cheap AND bug-free hotel??? PICKY, PICKY, PICKY!

The only hotel I can recall that's easily accessible via the Metro train is the Sheraton, right across the street from the Civic Center Metro stop. Coming from Lambert Int'l that stop is about halfway along the route to Scott, and is also the Greyhound and AmTrak station.

There may be others along the Metro route between Lambert and Civic Center but I've not been on that portion of the line in many years. All my travels on Metro have been between Scott and the Greyhound Station, and vice versa.

Phillip, the bus stops right at the train station gate so it is very convenient. Seniors get a break on the transit system.

Philip, there is a Metro (train) that goes from the airport directly to Scott. It is the last stop on that line and lets you off at a gate that will allow you to show your ID card via camera and then walk through the gate. It is behind the commissary. So depending on how many/heavy your bags are depends on getting to the PAX terminal. Not sure how much it cost but it is very inexpensive, maybe $5 at most. Also there is a city bus that runs on base but I think it will not be running by the time you arrive at Scott which cost a $1 on base.
Good Luck.

I would like suggestions on going from the airport to Scott. Our space-a travel request has expired and we must now fly commerical. My auto is at Scott.

I am also asking for recommendations of cheap but clean and bug free motels very near the airport. We will arrive about 9:30 pm Monday.

All ideas are appreciated. Happy Traveling.
