I do exactly what William S has described, and the reverse, three or four times per year. Caveats are unless you enjoy walking you need to get a local base ride from the McChord terminal to the BX #300 bus stop, well over a mile, and you need to catch the Amtrak (Tacoma Dome) in that south direction (Portland) before the last one, maybe 18:00? Give yourself minimum an hour and half, including wait at Transfer Sta 512, from catching #300 at BX to Amtrak Tacoma Dome. With optimum timing it is very smooth. And if you know Portland, Train Sta is a nice location. |

Chip, You can find directions and links to the route William suggested (as well as much more info for McChord) on Spacea.net's Wiki Page for McChord AFB. |

Chip, I would suggest following William's advice concerning Amtrak from Tacoma to Portland. My wife and I have done it that way the past two summers and have enjoyed the train ride right into the "downtown" of Portland. |

Amtrak to Protland from Tacoma: Coast Starlight, runs once per day. The Cascade, I think has five runs per day. If you are a senior, AAA, or active duty military, you'll qualify for a discount rate. From McChord, you can get to Tacoma Amtrak station via Pierce transit bus #300 (on base) to the 512 Park&ride, where you transfer to Sound Transit #574 to Tacoma Dome station. Ask for a transfer when you board the 300 bus. When you arrive at the Dome Station walk up the road about two blocks to the Amtrak station. The whole ride will be $1-2, depending on your age. I think Greyhound also has a small office at the Dome station too. |

Greyhound runs 4 times a day. AMTRAK has 2 routes. Coast Starlight and Amtrak Cascades. To get off base, you could use Pierce Transit #300 in front of the BX. Or just outside the gate is a Lakewood route to Tacoma locations. |

I would call one of the rent a car agencies, have then pick me up on base and drive to Portland. Another option would be to catch a greyhound bus to Portland. Happy Travels. |

What's the best way to get to Portland from the Pax Terminal at McCord? |
