Bob,A taxi from Mainz to Hahn is not the only alternative. Mainz to Hahn is about 50 miles so a taxi is probably cost prohibitive for 1-2 people anyway. An alternate route is the bus from Mainz Train Station to Frankfurt-Hahn (approx 11,00 € per person). p.s. Seems like this thread is now merging with "Ramstein – Frankfurt-Hahn Shuttle to be Discontinued" versus discussing the Ramstein to Frankfurt Free Shuttle Bus. |

Some additional details. Getting a train from Ramstein airbase requires a taxi to the train station in Ramstein or for 1 or 2 euros more to the depot at Landstuhl. Ramstein has limited service -- usually one train per hour during the day, open platform.. Landtuhl has a depot and is on a bunch of regional train lines that gives you more trains, more connections. On a parallel thread, John D provided the best avaialble option via train. Landstuhl to/from Mainz and Bus Route #600 to/from Mainz and Hahn airport. This will should be much cheaper than a taxi, but takes longer. Cheapest is the free shuttle from Ramstein air base to Frankfurt -am-Main and then the commercial airport to airport bus to Hahn. Problem is the free shuttle is only one run per day and weekdays only. Of course, one-way car rental is quickest and if 2 or more passengers, cheaper than most of the alternatives. |

Thanks Bob, hopefully they will reinstate the bus service like it was. I am leaning toward Free Bus to Frankfurt, then Commercial bus to Hahn, but hiring a car could be a option, wish I had kept my eyes open the last time I took that bus trip. Anything to make the trip smooth to keep all persons happy, will be good. |

One other viable alternative is a one-way car rental that may well be cheaper than both routings that I mentioned on my previous post. |

USO told me today that you must take a taxi from Ramstein to Hahn at approximately 120 euro. The only other method is to take a taxi to the Ramstein train. Train to Mainz. And, taxi to Hahn. Total cost about 80 euro per person. Good news is that there has been some movement to reinstate the shuttle but there is nothing on paper to this affect and may well never materialize. |

Don, The info on the free bus can also be found on the Spacea.net Ramstein Wiki page. "The free shuttle bus from the Pax Terminal to Frankfurt International Airport departs at 10:00 Mon-Fri (pick up in front of the Pax terminal) returning to Ramstein that afternoon (Monday-Friday). Verify this info with the Frankfurt USO before traveling. There is also a paid shuttle service for 35 euros per person (2009 prices) - contact the Frankfurt USO for details. " |

Don, if I am reading the schedule correctly at John D's Ramstein page, the bus leaves the Ramstein terminal at 1000, arrives Frankfurt Terminal 1 at 1200 and then departs there back to Ramstein at 1230. http://www.spacea.net/images/rms_uso_shuttle_sched.pdf |

Bob any current info will be good. I went to John D's link, in How To, got all the times from the bus going to and from Frankfurt/Hahn, just need to find out about the Free bus to Frankfurt, and roughly time of travel from someone. |

I'm at Ansbach right now, but will be back to Ramstein tomorrow evening. I'll check then if you still need the information. |

John D, as per usual thanks. Show and tell is so much better than hunt and search. You will soon have a 6 pack of Guinness waiting for you. Make that a 4 pack here in the UK. |

Irwin, You can find the directions for the train/bus route from Ramstein to Hahn in the "How Do I?" section of the Ramstein AB Wiki Page. Click on the link, enter your time and dates and it will price it out for you. |

Don Got to the "How Do I?" section of the Ramstein AB Wiki Page, click on the "other options to travel to/from Hahn" link and then click on "Frankfurt" on the graphic. Hey presto - the schedule for the bus service between FRA and Hahn. |

Irwin, what I am trying to get a handle on is getting from Frankfurt to Hahn. I thought if I can/could get to Frankfurt on the weekday bus, then might be able to get to Hahn. I'll keep trying to get a schedule, unless some good soul comes up with it first. Checked into train fares from Frankfurt to London, but I didn't want to buy the train. Still trying to find out about buses from Frankfurt to London. Not in a panic, just having a back up plan now the other bus company has stopped. |

The Scherer-Reisen commercial bus from Ramstein to Hahn Airport is gone. This has nothing to do with the free shuttle from the Base Pax terminal to Frankfurt-am-Main airport which runs one round trip on weekdays-- as Mike said below. There is a commercial bus line that runs between F-am-M and Hahn. Never took it so I don't know how often it runs, how long it takes or how much it costs. I did check trains and there is no train to Hahn. The best you can do is to take a train to a city that still has bus service to Hahn Airport. Train and bus stations are usually right next to each other. If fact, many of the trips listed on Bahn De webpage take you to the train station at F-am-M airport to connect you with the bus to Hahn. However, most trips required 2 or more train changes before you changed to the bus, cost is 19 euros or more depending on train schedule plus the bus fare -- and each trip takes about 4 hours or more. A previous thread suggested bus between Mainz and Hahn, and train between Mainz and Landstuhl. No idea of fares, connections or how long it takes. It's pretty clear that if you have a schedule that allows you to connect the free shuttle to/from Frankfurt am Main and the airport to airport bus without an overnight somewhere, this is the cheapest way to go and probably not more time than the alternatives. Of course, a car rental is certainly the quickest way to get to Hahn -- and if it's for two or more people, probably cheaper, too. |

Don, I looked at the Ramstein AMCGRAM and no mention of the free bus to/from the Frankfurt airport. However I seem to recall from other threads on this subject that the bus only runs M-F, no weekends. Departs RMS terminal at 1000, returns from FRA USO at 1400. Also, according to the AMCGRAM, the FRA USO number is DSN: 320-3530. FYI, the DSN number 337-5591 is listed for the Rhein-Main USO in Weisbaden. The FRA USO falls under this main Weisbaden office so they may have the information you are looking for. I read awhile back that the FRA USO had moved to a temporary location due to renovations of the office. Not sure if they have moved back? Good Luck _ |

Don, If the free bus is gone (haven't heard that it is) you can still get between the two using the bus/train. If you call the USO at Frankfurt they should be able to give you status on the free bus. |

Trying to plan ahead, for what good it does. Since the bus from Ramstein to Hahn has stopped now, is the shuttle bus from Ramstein to Frankfurt International still a goer daily? Anyone on the ground at Ramstein that can double check please. Thanks. DBM-UK |
