The wife and I ate at the Red Lion last year. It was really, really good. Great food and huge portions. Walkable from base.

Thanks JC. We are back in the UK now, but if and when I happen to need to get to WG from McGuire I will check it out, (only if I am traveling by my self) If you get time, just send the info to me and I will save it for future ref.

James,

The McGuire and Willow Grove Wiki pages at spacea.net should contain the info needed for traveling between McGuire and Philly and between Philly and Willow Grove.

If you are familiar with the routes could you please review the info and provide any needed updates? Thanks!

Dear D.B.M UK, getting from McGuire to Willow Grove is not simple. You would have to take a regional bus from McGuire to the Greyhound Terminal in Philly, then walk across the street to the train terminal, then take a train to the North of Philly, then switch to a local bus for the final 3-4 miles to Willow Grove. I have done it, and it will take you maybe 3 hours. But it is do-able. Let me know if you want specifics. JC

Alas, Willow Grove -- the best-kept secret in the SPATS world -- is on the chopping block. Feb 2011 is the BRAC closure date, at which time the VR squadron will move to McGuire, taking those super rides (C-9B and C-21) with them. Also, the Navy Lodge will close at end of CY 2010. A tough end for what was a grand VP base in days of old. With Brunswick, S. Weymouth and Lakehurst, Willow Grove was a major player in fixed-wing ASW. Us old P-2 and P-3 jocks will miss them all.

Gene, the place at the corner is the Red Lion Diner. Dunno about cheese steaks, but the folks are nice and the pies are home made and fabulous.

The old aircraft belong to the Delaware Valley Historical Aircraft Assn.

If you are curious, I would suggest heading there soon, as I don't know what will happen when the BRAC hammer comes down on the NAS/JRB in a short while.

Hope this ain't a hijack.

There used to be little place at the corner of Easton Rd (Rt 611) and County Line Rd, right at the northeast corner of the air station (near the base gate there) that had really good cheesesteaks and subs. Remember, a cheesesteak is "authentic" only if the grease runs down your arm as you eat it.

Also if you have time, there used to be a Messerschmitt Me 262 (German WWII jet) in a little park inside the base fence right along Easton Rd (Rt 611) Kinda neat piece of history.

This info was obtained from the Hertz web site. Hatboro is very close to Willow Grove if that is your ultimate destination. If you pick up the Hertz at WRI, the drive to the Hatboro/Willow Grove is very easy using the NJ and PA turnpike.

800 South York Road HLE
Address: 800 South York Road

United States
Phone : 215-957-1256
Hours of Operation: Mo-Fr 0730-1700, Sa-Su Closed

I hope this helps.

John D, believe it or not, I did look there first, I guess since it didn't hit me in the head, I didn't see it. Did I say I needed new glasses? I think I was just looking from/to, not link things together.

I did try to get a quote on Hertz, but didn't know which town to put in for drop off, their web site got me as far as Penn, but couldn't open the town. Will try try again.

Gene the Cheese steak sounds good. Never had a proper one before.

Don,
I was stationed for a while at NAF Warminster, which is near JRB Willow Grove (used to be a NAS)

We made the trip many times by POV to the exchange commissary at Ft Dix/McGuire. It ain't easy, even if you know where you are going and driving your own car.

I'm sure that someone will contradict this but I think the "easiest" but time-consuming way would be going by public transport (bus) from McGuire to downtown Philadelphia (see John D's stuff), then by train (bus terminal and train station are close together) to either the Hatboro or Warminster station. You'll have google.map to figure out which is closer to JRB Willow Grove. Then by taxi to the base.

Here's what's written in John D's FAQ's
Take the SEPTA R1 train from the (Philadelphia) airport (during week days the train number is SEPTA R2) to the Suburban Station and switch to the SEPTA R2 and get off at the Willow Grove station. Walk across the railroad tracks onto York Road and make a left on Easton Road staying on the left side and walk to the bus stop across the street from Barnes and Noble book store. Then take the SEPTA #55 bus towards Doylestown (not Olney) and get off at the front gate at Willow Grove Air Station. Walk across the street, go though the Gate and ask direction for the Subway which is right in front of the Terminal. The train cost $10 and the bus $2, they do offer a senior fare for those 65 and older when a Medicare card is shown. (written sometime in '08) There are links to the SEPTA timetables on John D's site.

Degree of difficulty: sorta like trying to get from Heathrow to Farnborough via public transport - maybe a little cheaper.

Be sure to pause for a cheesesteak sandwich in Philly.

Gene W.

Don,

The McGuire and Willow Grove Wiki pages should shed some light on the problem. :-)

I did a search for the last year, but didn't come up with anything. Other than a one way rental, is there anyone who can share info how to do this? I did a Google Map search, see it is 35-50 miles, depending on which way. Just trying to come up with another way to get from A to B, then to C.

Won't be traveling alone, so need something simple.
