Wife said to tell you if you like ceramica you should drive through Nove. It will require a box on the return flight. They do a good job of packaging!

I'm still hoping to get a car at Ederle. I received an email back from Europcar saying that I would have to call them for a reservation from Ederle (haven't made the call yet). If that doesn't work out I'll get back here for your great ideas.

Before taking the train from Vicenza to Aviano, check the front desk at the Ederle Inn. If it's still running, it was in 2008, they will have the schedule of a shuttle bus from there to Marco Polo Airport near Venice. From there you may be able to get a shuttle to Aviano or take the civilian bus or train. If anyone is interested I'll dig out my schedules and email them to you.

Thanks, guys, for these great tips!

I'm so happy to know WHERE the medevac bus drops you off - this will help immensely in case we get a reservation at the Ederle Inn.

Here's how I would do the trip:

If you have a fair amount of luggage, it would probably be best to take a taxi from the Army base to the train station in Vicenza (roughly 10 Euros). If you don't have a lot of luggage, take the number 1 bus, from right outside the gate, to the train station (about 1.50 Euros -- sometimes the front desk at the Ederle Inn will have tickets for the bus).

Take the train from Vicenza to Venezia Mestre. At Mestre, take the Udine Line train to Pordenone.

Or, if it's early in the day, take the Udine Line train to Sacile, and you can catch a train from there to the town of Aviano. It will be a bit of a walk, but you can get to the base from the train station, where you can wait for the AF bus to the flightline area.

The train from Sacile to Aviano runs just a few times during the day.

Here is a link for Italian train schedules:

http://www.trenitalia.it/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=ad1ce14114bc9110VgnVCM1000008 0a3e90aRCRD

If you travel to Pordenone, look outside the station, by the taxi stand, for the city map. You will want to walk to Piazza Risorgimento (10 minutes or less), where the blue buses have their hub. There is a ticket station in one of the storefronts on the piazza, where you can buy your ticket to Aviano, and inquire which stop number on the piazza you will wait for your bus.

Be sure to validate your train ticket on the platforms, and your bus ticket inside the bus -- you'll have a serious problem if you don't, and the inspectors catch you.

When we were at Vicenza last fall, we picked up a rental car from EuropCar, which is located next to the PX. We arranged to turn it in at Aviano. We didn’t make the flight and still had a couple days left on our rental, so we were able to drive it back to Vicenza where we caught the medevac bus several days later.

Aviano is a difficult base to get around and even more difficult to get on and off without a car. There is a shuttle bus that runs from lodging to the terminal. For some reason we couldn’t get the bus back to lodging, but one of the airmen at the terminal drove us back in an Air Force van.

My guess is that the medevac bus drop off point (commissary) is a good half mile from the billeting office. We walked it without any problems.

I haven't been able to find an answer to this one.....

Assuming we can get the Medevac bus from Landstuhl to Vicenza and it arrives in the evening, what are your suggestions to get to Aviano? Is the BOQ at Ederle near the Medevac drop-off point? Can one walk or get transportation from the drop-off point to a car rental?

Would appreciate some thoughts on this.....never been to northern Italy.

What we are trying to do is using a rental car, spend a couple of nights at the Mt. View Lodge in Aviano and then travel to the Florence area and back to Aviano for the PAT Express home.
