Good News for SPATS. I visited the Hertz agency at the BX today and found out the agency is moving shortly to the passenger terminal. Thus, there will be an agent during normal working hours to pick up a car and to turn in cars. Right now if you rent in Charleston you either have travel about 1 1/2 miles to the BX or taxi to the airport. The exact date of the transfer is not definite at this time. The agent said something about computer connections. David |

We flew into Charleston about midnight and we needed to pick up a car to get to Norfolk where our car was. I had made a reservation with Hertz for a one way and it was around $200. Checked Avis on line and I got one for $133.00 one way to Norfolk for one day. It pays to check around. no one every seems to be cheapest every time. The rental car counters at Charleston seem to be open to around 1AM. |

Just a follow-up. A week after the $110 quote, I checked again and the price at the airport was down to $83. This weekend checked again and now will be paying $68, same time frame, same vehicle type, etc. Persistence is paying off. This price is using the AAA rate with PC 141886. |

I had just the opposite experience. I'm renting from 6-10 May in Charleston. Airport price, taxes included, is $110. AFB price, taxes included is $172. This is Hertz, full size vehicle. Pays to shop around. |

Also, if you are renting in Charleston, the rates on base at the Hertz LE are lower then at the airport. The office is about 1 1/2 miles from the terminal. I know they have a drop off at the terminal. Not sure if they will pick you up. Try calling them. David |

We just rented a Hertz car from Atlantic Beach, FL (Jacksonville) to Charleston AFB. Best discount was Air Force Sergeants Association CPD 0010635 which yields a lower daily rate but with a mileage charge. This worked out to save about $20 dollars on a one day rental over that which we could have gotten with AARP or AAA discount. Hertz is the only auto rental that can be dropped off at the AMC terminal. |
