Do you know what time the shuttle goes from Ramstein to Frankfurt/Main? Do I have to schedule this pickup? Thank you very much |

When clicking on the arrow to the left of your point of departure or on "Show details for all", you will see the exact schedule and where and when you have to change trains. When you then click on "Show intermediate stops", you can see all train stops and times on the way to Berlin. |

I also prefer flying from Frankfurt to Berlin. Lufthansa flights cost around €100, sometimes less. If you want to ride the train, you find all info here: http://www.bahn.de/i/view/USA/en/index.shtml. This is the English web site of the Deutsche Bahn, where you can enter all your data and then get a schedule with different options and prices. You can also buy tickets online. However, when you do not know the exact date and time of your departure it is advisable to buy your ticket on site at the train station. |

Bill, As you probably know, the old overnite military duty train is long gone. You should be able to get multiple train options from the Ramstein area to Berlin, some at night, and others durning the day. Most all will require at least one train change. IC and ICE trains are fastest, regional trains will take much longer because of numerous stops. Go to bahn.de to work up a schedule. Driving to Berlin is a fools errand because of lack of good overnight parking near most hotels in the city. Public transportation is easy and reasonable throughout the city (U-bahn, S-bahn and bus). The train ride is approx. 7 hours, with 1 or 2 changes, depending on which train you take. The most convenient one would be from Landstuhl to Mannheim,(which takes approx. 1 1/2 hrs. Usually you have approx. 10-15 min. time to change tracks. Then you would take direct ICE train from Mannheim to Berlin. The trains usually go at least every hour, 24/7.The later trains (after 5PM) take longer (10 hrs) because you would change more often, plus not all the trains are the high-speed ICE trains |

Earl: We are also considering Ramstein to Berlin in May. We would prefer a nice leisurely train ride to Berlin. If I remember correctly before the Wall came down the military train was overnight. Do you know if going by train is a day or overnite trip? Express to Berlin or local stops? Any idea how long a trip? Any other comments or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Bill Mac |

.Michael, if you have time and want to make it an adventure, why not ride train from Germany to Prague, CZ? Stay few nights. Then on to Krakow, Poland. Stay a few nights. Then to Berlin. Then down to K'town. Big loop but great trip. Yes, can fly cheaper in Europe now than on the train. But the trains offer much that you will never get on a plane. The train from Berlin you will have to change trains at Manheim.Ride train from there to K-town. Then can ride from K-town to Landstul station. Then taxi to Ramstein |

You have a couple of other options to consider. train from Landstuhl to Berlin, train from Franfurt am Main Int'l airport, fly from Frankfurt am Main or from Frankfurt Hahn to Berlin. There is a free shuttle bus weekdays at 1000 that leaves from the Ramstein Pax Terminal to Frankfurt am Main. It returns at 1400 -- wait for it at the airport USO for the return. Weekend lander train tickets are cheap as well as "special fares" -- which don't say they are for senior citizens but they ask for your age. Enter "landstuhl" as your departure station for schedule and fares. Then try Frankfurt Flughof (int'l airport train station) and compare fares. It should be cheaper from the airport to Berlin and back. Ryan Air flies from Frankfurt Hahn to Berlin, but the commercial bus from Ramstein to Hahn airport has stopped running. Now you need to rent a car or take a train from Landstuhl to Mainz where there's a bus to the airport. Plan on 2 to 3 hours for this trip. Or you can take the free shuttle to Frankfurt main airport and then the airport to airport bus to Hahn. Or, (whew!) you can take the free shuttle to Frankfurt main airport and fly Air Berlin to Berlin. I flew Air Berlin from Vienna to Frankfurt last year -- it was cheaper than the train and good service for a discount airline. The obvious problem with the free shuttle bus to Frankfurt Main is there's only one run per day -- so it may make a linkup with a flight schedule difficult. Happy travels, Irv |

When we did that exact trip, a couple of years ago, we did the balancing, and chose to fly from Frankfurt to Berlin. We flew Lufthansa, but Air Berlin might be worthwhile checking out. |

I didn't price out train fare but one must compute flexibility of the car and the ability to sightsee on the way opposed to the speed and ease of the train. Last week gas was averaging about 1.40 euro per litre. Some folks enjoy the train while others don't want to give the car. |

My wife and I are hoping to fly space-a into Ramstein later this month(Cat VI) for a long weekend in Berlin. It seems like renting a car is the cheapest way for us to get to and from Berlin. Am I missing something? |
