You should be able to get multiple train options from the Ramstein area to Berlin, some at night, and others durning the day. Most all will require at least one train change. IC and ICE trains are fastest, regional trains will take much longer because of numerous stops. Go to bahn.de to work up a schedule. Driving to Berlin is a fools errand because of lack of good overnight parking near most hotels in the city. Public transportation is easy and reasonable throughout the city (U-bahn, S-bahn and bus). The most convenient one would be from Landstuhl to Mannheim,(which takes approx. 1 1/2 hrs. Usually you have approx. 10-15 min. time to change tracks. Then you would take direct ICE train from Mannheim to Berlin. Stay few nights. Then on to Krakow, Poland. Stay a few nights. Then to Berlin. Then down to K'town. Big loop but great trip. Yes, can fly cheaper in Europe now than on the train. But the trains offer much that you will never get on a plane. The train from Berlin you will have to change trains at Manheim.Ride train from there to K-town. Then can ride from K-town to Landstul station. There is a free shuttle bus weekdays at 1000 that leaves from the Ramstein Pax Terminal to Frankfurt am Main. It returns at 1400 -- wait for it at the airport USO for the return. Weekend lander train tickets are cheap as well as "special fares" -- which don't say they are for senior citizens but they ask for your age. Enter "landstuhl" as your departure station for schedule and fares. Then try Frankfurt Flughof (int'l airport train station) and compare fares. It should be cheaper from the airport to Berlin and back. Ryan Air flies from Frankfurt Hahn to Berlin, but the commercial bus from Ramstein to Hahn airport has stopped running. Now you need to rent a car or take a train from Landstuhl to Mainz where there's a bus to the airport. Plan on 2 to 3 hours for this trip. Or you can take the free shuttle to Frankfurt main airport and then the airport to airport bus to Hahn. Or, (whew!) you can take the free shuttle to Frankfurt main airport and fly Air Berlin to Berlin. I flew Air Berlin from Vienna to Frankfurt last year -- it was cheaper than the train and good service for a discount airline. The obvious problem with the free shuttle bus to Frankfurt Main is there's only one run per day -- so it may make a linkup with a flight schedule difficult. Last week gas was averaging about 1.40 euro per litre. Some folks enjoy the train while others don't want to give the car.   Michael P. It seems like renting a car is the cheapest way for us to get to and from Berlin. Am I missing something?
