I've taken Greyhound in & out of Dayton many times over the past decade, but never used the hub station on the town's outskirts. Always used the main terminal downtown, at 5th & Jefferson.

From there, it's a 2 or 3 block walk to Main St., where on WEEKDAYS you can take either the X1A (7 a.m. only) or the hourly #11 out to WPAFB for just a buck or two. The X1A passes within a block of the PAX terminal; #11 only goes to the W-P visitors' center....long way from the PAX.

John, thanks for writing that up and providing comprehensive information. Melinda, nice to get the price. Once again, the number of people traveling makes a big difference in the calculus. For two people $80 + $35 for the dog vs $135 for a rental car would have me saying "Hello, Avis" on the phone. If I were by myself, $40 + $35, maybe different.

John, your report highlights the need for spats to be flexible, patient, and to a large degree fun-loving. Your positive attitude made this trip memorable. I've never flown into Grissom which would be pretty convenient for me.

Aloha, John. We were that family!
Avis charged $135 for the one-way rental from Grissom to Fairborn, where we returned the car right outside the W-P gate. Reservation was made through Avis online prior to the trip. The manager at Avis (name was Herb) was very helpful, sending a driver to pick us up at the Grissom main gate. He expressed interest in doing more business with SPATs (and regretted having no more cars available for pax that day), but his is a small operation and arrangements for car rental are best made ahead of time.

We landed at Grissom from Hickam at about 9am. There were a group of about 11 of space-a'ers. One family prearranged an Avis pickup at Grissom's Main gate. A one way to Wright-Patterson...cost was over $100, however, when we called they said a 3 day mininum payment for going out of state. Evidently it can be done that way. Another man arranged an Enterprise pickup at the main gate for a one way in state rental(Enterprise has in state rentals only.) only. He took some people to the Indianapolis Airport to make connections. Since he had no more room, we stayed at the main gate(notice every thing starts at the main gate which is a good walk from the terminal). With no more rental cars available, we took a $25 cab to a Kokomo gas station (Greyhound pickup daily at 4:30pm). From there to Indianapolis bus station to Dayton bus station(drop off point for Greyhound is a hub station on Dayton's outskirts)was about a five hour trip...cost $80 for two. From the Dayton hub to the Wright-Patterson billeting office was a $35 cab ride. Yes, it can be done, and yes it was worth the effort :-)
