I thought I would start a document on USA car rentals that might be of service to our group that would be a companion to my Europe Car Rentals. I would appreciate input based on your knowledge of various bases and the rental car situation. For example if there is not a rental car location on a base in the US where would nearby rental car locations be and how would a Space A traveler get there. I would like to post rental car discount codes when appropriate. I will consolidate the information and verify or add information when needed. I will list info for any bases but I want to be sure and cover bases that we might fly into as Space A passengers.
U.S.A. Rental cars
Andrews AFB

Here's an update for BWI.
On Saturday 4/24/2010 we rented a van with two other couples going to Dover to pick up POVs in LT.
I didn't do the renting, just the riding so I am not sure about the final total. The rate quoted was about $217 including taxes and mileage so split three ways was cheaper than the sub-compact I was going to rent for $91 including tax, plus $.30 a mile, which would have brought the total to about $120. Rental including taxes and mileage was $140.
The Avis office on DuPont Hwy in Dover, across from Walmart is closed Sunday, but has a drop box for after hour drops.
Hertz would have been over $300 for the same one day Saturday, but you have to pay the two day rate because the office on Dupont Hwy is closed Sunday and does not have drop box.
Charleston Air Force Base-
There is a Hertz rental office near the BX on Charleston AFB. Telephone number is 843-760-6312. Reported to be moving to the passenger terminal. Hours M-F 0900-1600; Sat 0900-1200;Sun Closed. The Air Force Base is on the other side of the runway from the Charleston S.C. commercial airport. Major rental car counters are open until approximately 1AM at the Charleston Airport. It is about a $15.00-$20.00 cab ride from the Air Force Base passenger terminal.
Dover AFB, DE
Hertz a couple of miles from the base but the possibility of being picked up and dropped off at the terminal: 1679 South Dupont Highway, M-F 0730 - 1800, Sat 0900 - 1200, Sunday closed, phone number 302-678-0700.

Enterprise Dover on South Bay Road is open on Sundays. If you are reserving a one way rental, do Mapquest and figure out the mileage. It is $1 per mile plus the daily rental fee. I just booked a rental for Sunday for $188.34(cost of miles to Norfolk International) plus the $41 daily rental fee. So for $231 I can get home on the day I arrive to Dover. This is half the rate quote I received from another transportation company. Well worth it if you can split the cost with others. Hertz is closed on Sundays so this is the best I could do!!!

We were on base today and I stopped in the terminal. It is getting to be an uptown place. They have a large screen showing all the flight and the different types of planes. On the counter they had business cards from AVIS. It is not on base but in the Sear Auto Center at Ridgmar Mall. Phone # 817-731-3665, Fax 817 735 4895 or 800 331 1212. Mark Hays is owner/manager. Hickam Air Force Base, Hertz location in the Passenger terminal, 808 422-6915, Hours of Operation: 0800-1900 7 Days, Other rental car locations at the Honolulu airport.
Jacksonville NAS There is an Enterprise location in the passenger terminal n telephone 904 772 7007. (Suggest you check to verify the ability of Enterprise to do one way rentals before picking up the car)
There is a Hertz location at 1165 Cassat Avenue , 904-388-0199, Hours of Operation: Mo-Fr 0730-1800,Sa 0900-1400,Su Closed.
Jacksonville International Airport, Hertz, Phone: 904-741-2151, Hours of Operation: 0530-0100 7 Days. This would be an expensive cab ride from NAS Jax. It might be possible to ride the bus from NAS Jax to the Jacksonville International Airport. Many other rental car locations are at the Jacksonville International Airport.

We just rented a car one way from Orange Park Mall(close to NAS) with AVIS to Melbourne, FL. We hitched a ride from another passenger to the Avis at Sears Auto Center and were on our way within 15 min. It was $65 with online booking, which I thought was very reasonable. The Enterprise office at NAS Jacksonville is not able to rent one way. You have to go the the Jacksonville Airport which is far away from the NAS and to the North, it would be an expensive cab ride. I don't know if they have a shuttle that goes to the airport.
Norfolk Naval Base
There is a Hertz branch in the passenger terminal. The phone number is 757 489-1780. The hours are Mo-Fr 0800-1800, Sa 0900-1200, Su Closed. The Norfolk commercial airport is a $20-25 cab ride and they have a number of rental car companies and are open from early to late 7 days a week.
Pittsburg ANG Base
Collocated with the commercial airport. Many rental care available at the commercial airport.
Pope Air Force Base-Fort Bragg Hertz branch, This is not on the base and may require a cab ride to get to the branch.

The Enterprise office is in the PX mall. Call and they will pick you up from the PAX terminal. (707) 437-7300. (Suggest you check to verify the ability of Enterprise to do one way rentals before picking up the car)
The Travis Enterprise office is open Mon -Sat. They will apply mil discount automatically. When the PX office is closed, the call automatically rolls over to their Fairfield office and they will still pick you up. NOTE However, the mil discount is not automatically applied. You must now ask for it.
When returning the car, you can park it the parking lot 150 yds from the PAX terminal and leave the car keys in a drop box inside the terminal. There is no drop-off fee.

And I believe the Budget office (that is just off base at Travis) can usually send a driver to pick you up at the terminal, if you arrive during their business hours. Otherwise it might be around $8 for a cab ride (you have to call an off-base cab company to come get you, AND notify the gate that you are expecting the taxi).
I do not know if you now can park the car in front of the terminal and leave the keys somewhere in the terminal, as you could when the Budget counter was right there. Anyone?
We've rented Budget cars from that location several times (once a 1-way to Oakland to catch a commercial flight), and they were very flexible and understanding about possible delays for us space-a travelers.

I have rented cars in Warrington and Horsham. Warrington had an Enterprise with decent prices and they picked me up at the gate. The gate is a very short walk from quarters (5min). Horsham had enterprise also but not as pleasant. Both are just a few miles from gate. Also there is a bus stop outside gate going north and south. If you go south you can connect to trains into the Philly area. Hope this helps

Good info, Alicia. I thought Enterprise did not do one-ways. A tad expensive at $1/mile, but it clearly can be worth it in some circumstances. |

We were on base today and I stopped in the terminal. It is getting to be an uptown place. They have a large screen showing all the flight and the different types of planes. On the counter they had business cards from AVIS. It is not on base but in the Sear Auto Center at Ridgmar Mall. Phone # 817-731-3665, Fax 817 735 4895 or 800 331 1212. Mark Hays is owner/manager. The Travis Enterprise office is open Mon -Sat. They will apply mil discount automatically. When the PX office is closed, the call automatically rolls over to their Fairfield office and they will still pick you up. NOTE However, the mil discount is not automatically applied. You must now ask for it.
When returning the car, you can park it the parking lot 150 yds from the PAX terminal and leave the car keys in a drop box inside the terminal. There is no drop-off fee.

And I believe the Budget office (that is just off base at Travis) can usually send a driver to pick you up at the terminal, if you arrive during their business hours. Otherwise it might be around $8 for a cab ride (you have to call an off-base cab company to come get you, AND notify the gate that you are expecting the taxi).
I do not know if you now can park the car in front of the terminal and leave the keys somewhere in the terminal, as you could when the Budget counter was right there. Anyone?
We've rented Budget cars from that location several times (once a 1-way to Oakland to catch a commercial flight), and they were very flexible and understanding about possible delays for us space-a travelers.

I have rented cars in Warrington and Horsham. Warrington had an Enterprise with decent prices and they picked me up at the gate. The gate is a very short walk from quarters (5min). Horsham had enterprise also but not as pleasant. Both are just a few miles from gate. Also there is a bus stop outside gate going north and south. If you go south you can connect to trains into the Philly area. Hope this helps

There is a Enterprise on NAS Pensacola. We got our car there, took a taxi from the airport to NAS. We did their promotion, 10 bucks a day, unlimited mileage and drove the car back to Indiana.

Discount codes vary and also change daily.
Here is a site that sometimes works but the codes sometimes do not work-depending on "who knows what". I usually check most of them.

hotwire is also a big factor and there are other discount codes if you Google them.
Leland has been doing the GPS updates but his data is firm while yours is alway changing in terms of rates and the best "situation".

I wanted to create a guide for military travelers so they would have info on rental car locations at or near the space a terminals. As we know some of the locations are easier to obtain a rental car than others and at some locations a traveler could get stranded on the weekend when there is no rental car location anywhere nearby that would be open. I would appreciate any info such as is there a location on base, at the terminal or somewhere else, company name, phone number, hours and any other important info. If no rental location on base where would you have to go to get a car and how would you get there. Thanks for any help.

Good luck on your project. I am not sure how you can keep it current except for companies, numbers and locations at various bases.
It is probably a much bigger project than you realize because it can change daily and does so also on the net. It also changes because of discount codes, availability of one way rentals, holidays, etc. Hertz may beat Enterprise one day and not the next.
I will be happy to give you info and I am sure that others are also. What info are you looking for--Companies, numbers and times?

I just spoke with the Enterprise rep at NAS Jax. He said Enterprise has a program going on for 60 days that allows one way rentals out of Florida only as they have too many cars in Florida. He said that he had been told that it may or may not continue after this period. |

My step son, a long time employee of Enterprise, told me that Enterprise has recently purchased Alamo & National & is now renting one way rentals w/o a large fee. I've not experienced this; maybe there are those who have & can comment. |

Neal, the NAS Jax Enterprise operation has an exception for one-ways - you can drop the car off at the Enterprise office at NS Mayport and, I believe, at Jacksonville airport.
Most folks who fly into NAS Jax and want a one-way will rent from an agency in Orange Park. It is much closer than the airport and the prices are lower because you do not have to pay the airport car tax. |
