I'm at Mildenhall right now and got a cheap car rental from Enterprise here. They picked me up (sent a cab to get me). Beware of the cost of gas here. 1.21 pounds per litre. That works out to about $6.61 per gallon. You need to consider that before you rent a car for a long trip. Public transportation might be cheaper. |

Bob-Cat 6: Great! $136 as low as I could imagine a flight would be these days. Was especially glad you did the Highlands. Pat and I have been there quite a few times but not Orkney Islands. We have done the Western Islands, Lewis, Skye, etc. Please send me a private email about the Orkneys, i.e., accomodations, travel, etc. |

Thank-you D.B.M and Bob-Cat6. I'm an email 'special offers' member of Enterprise. That is very helpful D.B.M. Bob, thanks for the explain, [everything is an education], but I inserted my blurb for different motive. Icelandic explosion ruined my plans for May to Mildenhall, but think September may be a good idea. I'd like to say hello to my gutsy Pope who will be visiting Scotland/England in Sept. Previously had been thinking of A EURAIL venture, but see advantages to four wheels at present. [including a bunk as needed]-Always had good experiences with Enterprise. Thanks for the heads-up D.O.B. |

Michael, I think what you are asking is "Why wouldn't you just rent a car and drive between Mildenhall and Edinburgh if rentals are cheap?", forgive me if that's not what you mean but that's what I'll try to answer, for us anyway. The reasons we chose to take a train to Edinburgh, rent a car, return it to Edinburgh, then train back south were several. First, we've driven/toured from Mildenhall as far as North Yorkshire by car a couple of years ago and didn't plan to do any touring of that area again on this trip. We wanted to get to Edinburgh as reasonably/quickly/enjoyably as we could. We also planned to spend three nights touring Edinburgh before heading to the highlands and knew that a car was not necessary in Edinburgh and in fact would have been a nuisance. Why pay rental and parking on a car that you don't use for three or four days? When we were ready to leave Edinburgh we rented a car from Hertz (two weeks for just over $500) and their office was within walking distance of our Edinburgh hotel. We toured the Highlands, Orkney Islands, Isle of Skye and visited a couple of places near Edinburgh, including the Falkirk wheel, before returning the car. Then we spent another day and night enjoying Edinburgh before catching an early train back to London and then the bus to Mildenhall. The final reason we decided on the train is...we like trains! Given our choice of transportation modes in Europe (especially when exploring cities and not rural areas) we prefer trains. It gives everyone a chance to see the scenery. |

One of the Board Members just left, (I think they left) Mildenhall. They rented a car from Enterprise at Barton Mills. I think they had it for 10 days.If not mistaken the costs was around £180. Which I didn't think was bad. I had a e-mail from Enterprise yesterday saying they had some special deals in the next few weeks here in the UK. |

Checking via internet appears to show that car rentals by the week in England can be reasonable. Perhaps I not getting the whole story? Are reasonable rates available at Mildenhall area? |

Jack, it was second class with reserved seating in the quiet car (meaning no cell phones, music or conversations above a whisper). Car had free wifi as well. It was a great ride. The price I quoted was pp (per person). At the time, it worked out to be $136 for the two of us one way. After touring Edinburgh for several days we rented a car for two weeks then returned to Mildenhall via train and the Heathrow to Mildenhall military bus. |

Bob-Cat 6: What class of rail travel did you use for that amount. Sounds pretty good if it is about $75 or so for two. In 30+visits I have used the bus, train, auto rental, air shuttles, cheapie air, etc. Yours sounded pretty good. Please describe the accomodation on the train. |

September 2009 we took a National Rail train from Edinburgh Waverly station to Kings Cross, London. We departed 05:50 and arrived at Kings Cross at 10:00. The cost was 42 pounds pp. At Kings Cross we took the Picadilly line to Heathrow Terminal 3 (4 pounds pp). We arrived at Heathrow by 11:30, plenty of time to catch the 12:30 bus to Mildenhall. We had researched alternate train routes for price but determined the route through London was best. |

Several years ago,we flew from Stanstead to Glasgow and Ryan Air offered either a free or a very low cost train ticket to Edinburgh-cant remember. We paid the conductor on the train and had to show our boarding pass for the free/cheap train ticket. The airport in Scotland where Ryan Air flies into services both Glasgow and Edinburgh.Train station is right outside the terminal. |

Catch the bus in Edinburgh and tell them to deliver you to Heathrow. The bus station in Edinburgh is easy to find. We caught the "midnite express". If I remember correctly we made two tea stops, and arrived in time to catch the Mildenhall bus. Elaine |

I think Elaine meant they took the bus from Scotland to Heathrow other than the train. Forgive me Elaine if I am wrong. Have you checked into Ryanair? They might fly from the Edinburgh to Stantsed, that would be quicker and closer, just a thought. The free bus from Heathrow should leave for Mildenhall/Lakenheath from T3 at 10:00 and 12:30. Information is on John D's Space A pages. |

Thanks for the help- I was asking am I heading in the wrong direction or in effect wasting travel time going the way I am planning? In other words, is there a quicker, better, short way to travel to RAF Mildenhall from Edingburgh than train into London then to Heathrow then a shuttle bus to Mildenhall? Not sure of what you mean Jess by the bus? Are you saying use the bus from King's Cross to Heathrow? Or a bus from Edinburgh to Heathrow? Thanks all. Mike |

Jess and I made the same trip last Aug, but we caught the bus. When we learned the cost difference, it was the bus hands down right into Heathrow. Then went to the free bus stop for Mildenhall. I think the bus leaves at 7:30 am. Hope you are going to the Tattoo while in Edinburgh. It is fantastic. Elaine |

Michael, there's a brochure on the free shuttle on the Spacea.net Mildenhall Wiki Page that you should find helpful. Also, can you explain what you're asking by "Am I travel in a circle to get to the middle?" |

We are leaving from Edinburgh on 15 July heading to RAF Mildenhall hoping to catch a SPACE A return to CONUS. Looking at a train from Edinburgh to London then catch the 'tube' to Heathrow as I understand there is a free space A shuttle between Mildenhall and Heathrow. Anyone out there had a similiar experience? Am I travel in a circle to get to the middle? Thanks for all advice in advance Mike |
