If taking a train , ask for a Senior Discount. We did this from Barcelona to Seville and paid the 5 Euros for a great discount.
(This is a translation from the Renfe website.)
If it is 60 years old, already it enjoys the advantages and comforts that to him the trip in train offers, obtain the Card Sea bream and can acquire tickets for any class and train of Long Distance. Mondays, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday one benefits from a 40% of discount. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, as well as, for tickets that have not been obtained for sale anticipated and with reserve the discount will be of 25%.

The Card Sea bream, with an annual validity, can be acquired in stations the RENFE, Offices of Sales and Travel agencies by 5 Euros. Also the possibility exists of acquiring the Card associated Sea bream to debit and credit cards, emitted by some banking organizations.

Reed, Tony is giving good advice. Having visited NS Rota several times in the past several years, I was a bit worried about trying to use Spanish commercial buses, as I do not speak much Spanish and thought it would be difficult to communicate with the ticket agents and bus drivers. Actually, my fears were unfounded as I learned a couple of years ago. Catching a Spanish commercial bus at the Rota bus station is very easy! Even for non Spanish speaking people. The bus station is located just 2 blocks outside the NS Rota Main Gate (to the right) and all you need to know is the name of the town you wish to take the bus to. For example, Sevilla or Jerez or Cadiz. All of those destinations are worthy of a full day's visit and you can get to them cheaply in a large, comfortable air conditioned bus and not have to worry about finding your way to a particular destination and back to NS Rota while driving a rental car......and you don't have to worry about finding a parking place, either! Taxis and city buses are easy to use if where you wish to visit is too far to walk from the bus stations.

I may never use another rental car while visiting souther Spain from NS Rota, Reed! Try the bus!

Reed,

Renting a car for driving around in the area is convenient, depending on what you want to do. I wouldn't drive to downtown Cádiz and would take the bus or ferry instead, since parking in town is a mess. And even if you're visiting other towns in the area like Seville, Jerez, Puerto Santa Maria, etc. there are buses leaving from the Rota Bus Terminal, adjacent to the main gate. Unless you're planning on leaving the base for a few days and continue visiting other places in the area, I wouldn't rent a car. That's how I would do it, but you may think different.

Happy travels!

Tony is on the money. The walk to the terminal is long and, if dark, you might not find it without help. Taxi, as Tony directs, is right across from the Pass Office. Was $5 last Fall.

Leland,

Uh, I thought I had mispelled the word, but hadn't. No, I usually don't have that type of a problem, thank God.

Happy travels!

Good for you. I rarely take my advice. Gets me into trouble, especially with the better half.

Reed,

Take my advice, I do it all the time, get your 24-hour pass at the gate, then walk to the taxi corner (next to gate) and take it to the Terminal. They usually charge me 4 Euros, plus the 1 E tip I usually give the driver. You can walk it, but it takes you a good 20 minutes and you must always be prepared for severe weather, which makes it worst.

The terminal is 7/24 with a very good cafeteria next to it. By the way, just came from Rota NAS and the Pizza Parlor is closed for the time
being; they're fixing the building.

Good day today for space-a; many flights to the ConUs, but hardly any Spats waiting.

Happy travels!

24 hour terminal. If you are both in good health you could walk from the gate to the terminal dragging bags but I'd take a cab as it is about a 20 minute walk for most. See John D's Space-a Pages link (above) for info.
