John, the bus is run by the Navy Exchange. I strongly suspect that they are hoping that it will lead to greater NEX sales and possibly greater use of the Hale Koa.

Jeff,

I guess it was the old established route that I saw the bus on. I didn't know it went to Ford Island having never stayed there. Thanks for pointing that out.

This is really nice of the military to provide this bus service, I really think it's great! Sometimes the military cuts benefit to retirees but this is one time they excelled even theough I'm sure it is mostly for AD as it should be but we benefit also.

Bill; Just a clarification. I know the NEX shuttle bus makes its rounds thru different housing areas and such at Pearl, could this have been the shuttle you saw?

Just prior to checking out of the Navy Lodge on Ford Island this morning I noticed that the new shuttle had also made the rounds at Ford Island. I don't know the exact route it took but it did in fact go by the Navy Lodge and it looked like it went down towards the museum.

As Jeff has alluded, the huge, fairly new, retail complex at Pearl Harbor (actually located well outside the base) is a combined enormous Navy Exchange (don't miss the Hawaiian clothing, and souvenirs on the upper level) and big Commissary. There are a lot of other facilities there besides the extremely well-stocked liquor store -- barber shop and hairdresser, travel office, big food court, and more. At that one stop you can get a whole lot of shopping done!

What some may not know is that from the Hickam BX and BXtra to the Hickam Commissary is only about one long block, easily walked by cutting across a parking lot. While the Hickam commissary is not as large as that at Pearl, it is easier to get between it and Waikiki locations via the #19 bus that runs approx. every 30-40 minutes. (Going to the Pearl complex via TheBus rather than this new shuttle requires a change of buses partway along.)

Of course, the new shuttle will be much quicker between the various points because of eliminating all the interim stops that TheBus must make. I can hardly wait to give it a try -- hope it'll still be operating next winter!

I am retired AF and had never seen a NEX/Commissary like the one at Pear Harbor. If you are a visitor to Oahu, the Pear Harbor NEX/Commissary and ITT is a must. 32 different varities of Box wines, we are use to 4-6 at the Ellsworth AFB Shopette!!

This service was provided about 5 years ago and it seemed to be was well used. At that time is was a full size bus. My only concern is that every 90 minutes may be a little too frequent, hopefully not. I do hope it succeeds, people riding at that time were not only Hale Koa visitors but other military staying in the Waikiki area.

Leland,

Thanks for the info. That is good news if it continues.

It will bring up all kinds of questions.

Larry, I would venture that it will not go through China Town like the #19 bus does. I will assume that it will also not make any stops except as indicated to maintain a 30 min return-90 min total route schedule.

I am curious if a shuttle bus service might be developed for the Joint Base as Hickam dropped theirs a couple of years ago.

Any additional info will be appreciated. The Bus stills works well but this could be better!!!

The shuttle just started while we were in Hawaii. It does not provide any other stops other than departure from the Hale Koa to Hickam BX to Pearl BX. It is free. But if people don't use it, it will be discontinued after 120 days. It is faster than THE BUS because it doesn't make any stops other than the scheduled route.

That's good news....gotta be faster than Bus 19. I wonder if they'll allow any stops between HIK/Pearl and the H.K. Hotel, like getting off in Chinatown instead of going all the way to the HK?

I don't think Leland's first attempted post made it online. This is the first I've read about the shuttle.

I've added the info to the Hickam page - hopefully the test will be successful!

John, I posted it in this section and am 99% certain I went all the way through with the process. I was peeved because I had cut-and-copied the whole article, and it had to be reformatted, line-by-line, because it was coming from .pdf format with hard line breaks.

Oh well. Thanks for the link.

Leland,

Where/when did you post it as it should be still there? Sometimes I post something but don't follow-through with the Preview part.

Here's a full link that should work fine: http://tinyurl.com/38gnnj4 . The subject article is at the bottom of page 2.
