Paul, If you get to Ramstein, you can take the medevac bus from Landstuhl to Vicenza, it runs twice a week and it is free. |

Thanks for your comments everyone. It helped in my planning. Going to give Space-A a try even though it is the dreaded "Summer Season". Final destination is Naples. Looking to get to Rota then await a flt to Naples or Sicily. If we wind up at Ramstein, will take a train into Italy before renting a car. Will rent in northern IT. When I arrive in Naples, I'll turn it in to whomever (Hertz, Avis, etc) then rent long term at the Naples Navy facility there near the civilian airport. Prices are far better from the base. For departure, will return the rental to Naples Base and await Space-A there. Wondering now if renting from the mil facility north of the airport navy base would be less expensive? I know that at the civilian part of the terminal, in the past, there is that extra fee (+20%?). To avoid it I've gone into Naples to the train terminal to rent and saved. Does anyone think this would be the same wrt the two military locations there - one at the airport (+20%) and the other further north (-20%)?? |

I was leaving Copenhagen yesterday and had planned to drive or train down to Ramstein. After costing out all options it turned out that flying was far less expensive than either the train or a one-rental. |

That's what I did - found an Avis rental at Stuttgart that needed to go back to Italy. Avis gave me a killer rate on it and I dropped it off at Naples - win-win! |

Each rental car company has their own rules. In Germany, I find that some restrict where their cars can be taken in Southern and Eastern Europe. They fear the cars will be stollen and shipped to Africa or the Middle East. Sometimes the restriction only applies to the more expensive car classes. |

When they do get stuck with a specific car in the wrong country, they actually let others drive it back. http://www.hertz-transfer.eu/index.php?lang=GB |

The EU has not standardized automobile registration, inspection, insurance, etc. Hertz Italy cannot rent out a car registered to Hertz Germany. If you rent in Germany they will let you drop it off in Italy, but only if you pay for Dieter to travel to Italy and retrieve the car. And that is expensive. They don't care if you drive to Italy, as long as you return it to the country of origin. |

I have an auto rental question. Say I land in Ramstein and rent a car on or off base (maybe this makes a difference?). If I now drive to Italy, can I drop it off in Naples sometime later, for example? Basically I'd pick up in one country and drop it off in another. .... and would one rental agency be better than another (Hertz, Avis, Eurocar)? In the past, I have always rented and stayed within that country and not crossed borders with the rental. For this next trip, because it is my first Space-A adventure, I most likely will not get directly to Italy, which is my objective. If there are issues with this approach, I'd take a train instead, say from Ger., or wherever, to Italy, then rented a car in Italy. I like the car approach though because I can mosey along at my own pace and explore. Your comments please, Paolo |
