I asked a Police officer this weekend at NAS Jax. He said that the new instruction said that a taxi driver could come base after a background check or if they had a military ID. He said that he did not think that many had applied for the background check as of now. |

Any updates on the 'no taxi/shuttle buses' allowed on base? |

Phyllis, thanks for this bit of information. I was flying in commercial and going to take taxi to NAS Ft. Worth. At least I'll be traveling light. |

Cecil was closed by BRAC and is owned by the city of Jax. Suppose to be a commercial center. The golf course is leased out and has gone to pot!!! Mayport has no permanent carriers at the moment-fighting with Norfolk to get one repositioned to Mayport. Actually, the basin is pretty empty. The golf course at Mayport is having problems to! Yea , I know you didn't ask about the courses, just though I'd throw in the important things to a retiree! Elaine |

Cecil Field is approx 20-25 miles west of NAS Jacksonville and therefore do not use the same runway. |

Not having been at NAS Jax in over 45 years, where is Cecil Field in relation to Jax? Do they use the same runway? Is the field at Mayport still there? Do carriers still tie up at Mayport? elf |

dinotars: I'll raise this matter with the Enterprise agent the next time I visit NAS Jax, and report back in this thread. I ended up walking the rental car's keys over to base ops and asked the duty NCO to secure them until the next morning. He reluctantly agreed to do so saying that he wouldn't guarantee the key's safekeeping; big help! |

Mike, Thanks for the information on that eventuality.Perhaps the rental agent has an acceptable plan such as leaving the keys in the glove compartment and locking the car,for after closing hours. |

Another NAS Jax problem: If returning an Enterprise rental car after normal working hours, be advised that the key drop box is INSIDE the terminal (and its doors will probably be locked!). I found myself confronted with this situation at 2345 hours on 18 May 2010. Luckily my POV was parked in the terminal lot! |

It's the same way in Fort Worth. No cabs or shuttle services on base!! Most of the time we are able get a duty driver to take us to the car. We do wait sometimes, but don't think it has ever been more than 1/2 hour and it would take that long or longer to walk it. What we did this spring, was use our rental car to get our car, than took it back to Hertz. |

Update: I called, then sent the following to the NAS CO: Captain Maclay: First, welcome aboard! I am a retired United States Marine Corps Captain and an avid user of space-available travel. I regularly fly in and out of Jacksonville on your C-40 aircraft. I also am a senior member of the www.pepperd.com website - probably the most complete and best followed websites designed for active duty and retired military travelers. A recent post indicated that taxi service on your base had been stopped. This is disturbing for me and many of my fellow SPATs as many of us find ourselves flying out of NAS Jacksonville but unable to find flights back in. This either necessitates a flight into Jacksonville International or, in some cases, renting an automobile at an adjacent base and dropping it in Orange Park. In either situation, we are faced with the problem of getting to the Jacksonville Passenger Terminal to pickup our automobiles. I do know you permit buses on base but, getting from JIA to the NAS on the bus is a bit convoluted. Frankly, following a long trip I will rent an and drop it in Orange Park, as I have done several times Then, a taxi is the easiest way to the Passenger Terminal. If we now are to be dropped at the Gate we are faced with a very long walk to the Passenger Terminal. I know that the Quarter Deck will sometimes provide transportation but there are times this is restricted because of other considerations. While I still consider myself in great shape at the age of 80, I dread the idea of ever having to walk that distance lugging suitcases. I know I speak for many military retirees when I ask that this restriction either be modified or done away with. An hour later I received a telephone call from Command Master Chief Hudson. In brief, their hands are tied. The Admiral in charge of this region has mandated no taxis to be allowed on any base. The primary reason is, of course, the potential for terrorism. The second, and a local reason, several taxi cab drivers and or passengers have perpetrated acts of assult on base civilians and personnel stationed there. I asked why city buses were still allowed. The answer is that they are driven by the same drivers each day. The chief indicated that one possible answer might be the return of a base shuttle bus but that would depend on available money and even if established might not be available at all hours. We discussed using the Quarter Deck but he said while he was aware that it is sometimes done,in reality, it is illegal due to liability requirements. If anyone is inerested in making a similar contact the CO is Capt. Jeff Maclay. Email: jeffrey.maclay@navy.mil |

If a city bus can come on base, why not a taxi? Having asked that question I will call the Base Commanding Officer sometime Tuesday and will keep you informed. |

I don't know what NAS stopped taxis and shuttles from coming on base. We only learned of it when we told the shuttle driver we needed to be dropped off at the AMC terminal. We called the OOD from the pass and ID office and simply said that we needed transportation to the AMC terminal and the duty driver showed up about 10 minutes later. |

Ages ago when we had the discussion on long term parking, I ask how a person would get to the lot from the terminal-I was told the duty driver-no matter what time of the day or night. That's if you are flying in, I suppose you would need to arrange with the terminal to be picked up if you are flying out. I believe a new CO is in place at NAS, maybe that is the reason for the change. Elaine |

As Jim Coppens says, the WS1 bus is a convenient and money-saving way to get from NAS Jax to the downtown area, including the Greyhound terminal. Unfortunately, it goes nowhere near the long term parking so you may need to ask someone with a car for a ride that way, or ask for a duty driver. I have had to take Greyhound back to Jax several times after leaving my car at the terminal and have taken the bus to the Pass Office (right at the entrance gate) and been able to get a ride to the terminal with the duty driver. Sometimes I have had to wait a while but have never been turned down for a ride. Roger in Jacksonville, FL |

It is news to me about no taxi rides to the terminal. I use to see them all the time on Saturday morning for the Gitmo flights. I hope that this policy will be reconsidered, especially if it swamps the Duty Driver with ride requests. Roger in Jacksonville, FL |

A friend of mine just gave me data on Public Transport out of NAS Jax. I am passing it on here. Perhaps the city bus mentioned can take people from long term parking to the AMC terminal. The data below relates to getting public transportation to the Greyhound Bus station. there is a city bus that comes on the base and goes right by the Greyhound terminal. It comes relatively close to the terminal, you would just need a ride to Enterprise and Wasp (see map). Here are links to the map, the bus schedule, and the bus route. The Greyhound terminal is located at Bay and Pearl, which the bus goes by. Wow! And that is a long walk. Last time we used a taxi the driver was retired Navy and showed his military ID to the guard. Dunno if that was required then, or would help now. |

Jim: Was there any reason for this? That is indeed bad news because you are going from one end of the base to the other. I know the Quarter Deck is liberal but I doubt they will run a shuttle for space-a'ers. I'm beginning to wonder why the Navy is so different in this regard than the Air Force. A classic example is the Air Force doing away with base decals per DOD directive several years ago and the Navy insisting on them. |

As of early May 2010, NAS Jax no longer allows taxis, shuttles etc. to take passengers to the AMC terminal. You'll be dropped at the front gate and will have to rely on either a duty driver or the kindness of someone with a car so plan accordingly. |
