We rented a car in Split and drove up to Plitvice waterfalls national park. It was lovely, and I would highly recommend it. Krka waterfalls were less impressive, but not as long of a drive. We rented the car from one of the rental agencies right on the Riva (waterfront) in Split. Moderately expensive, but worth it.

Dubrovnik was another highlight - what a beautiful city! Some of the ferries from Ancona go to Dubrovnik and some to Split. If you can go to Dubrovnik, please do -- the old walled city is incredible. We took a bus from Dubrovnik to Split. It was a long ride, but pretty. I wouldn't recommend it with kids, as they would probably be bored.

Be sure to take a boat trip out to some of the islands along the Dalmatian coast.

Bob, have you checked with the car rental companies to learn if
1)
a) They will let you rent in Switzerland but return the car in Italy?
b)They will later let you rent a car in Croatia and return it in Italy (am I right in guessing that is your second planned set of travels)?
2) What that will cost in both cases?

I ask because in a number of previous threads over the years members have reported here that European one-way country-to-country auto rentals are either not available or the cost is totally prohibitive.

If you want the car simply as a way to get from Zurich to Ancona, and later from Split to Rome, why not take the train (or fly -- but I realize that the answer to that may be baggage weight limitations and also the need to spend time and money to get between the airports and the towns on both ends).

If you took the train to each of your major destination(s) you could then rent a car locally for explorations and turn it in there before getting back on the train. So much more simple -- and less expensive -- than trying to do a one-way rental between countries.

We personally love the European trains because they operate from the center of the cities (no expensive costs to get from the airfield into town), I can see the scenery as we go, and we normally fall into very interesting conversations with our fellow passengers because of the seating arrangements that usually have you facing each other.

But if you DO find some agency that will rent a car one way to another country at a reasonable rate, please do let us know! Lots of people have wanted to do this in the past.

Please share what good or bad experiences you had at renting a car in Croatia. I'm planning a 3 week trip in late Sept to rent a car at Zurich; overnight at Garmisch(Edelweiss) and Vicenza (Ederle) and drop the car at Ancona, Italy for night ferry to Split, Croatia. Rent a car at Split to see Makarska & Korcula areas and return to Split>Ancona>Pompei>Rome>ORD. I'd also like to learn what you have enjoyed at Venice, Italy; and Croatia. Who has done a Coatia trip report?
