Hertz was still in Bldg 305 at Ramstein as of a few months ago. You can obtain the names and contact info for the other car rental agencies at Ramstein from the Ramstein AMCGRAM (linked from the Spacea.net Ramstein Page).

My husband and I are currently in Belguim near Shinnen. We came over on leave two weeks ago and here's some info to add. The old lodging office is now closed and everything is consolidated now in the new bx/hotel/mall next to the pax terminal (very convienent). There is a office with three rental agencies (in the mall across from Macaroni Grill) and Hertz was not one of them. Two of them we were not familar with (my husband's Belgian and hadn't heard of them). But the third was Sixt and they gave us a good one way rental rate from Ramstein to Aachen - 70 euro. It was definately cheaper than the train. The deal was that the car would need to be returned in Germany and could not be returned in the Netherlands. So we opted to turn in in Aachen which is not far from Shinnen but, in Germany (maybe 45 min drive) and had the in-laws meet us.

Also since I will be retired myself in a couple of years so, I inquired with Sixt about retiree rental. They said it is not allowed on base but, they would gladly drive retirees to the office in town for rental (similar to Hertz).
I don't know if Hertz is no longer on base or if they are just in a different building now but, I'll try and get that info when we return to Ramstein on Monday.
Hope this helps someone.

Hertz has an on base rental office that rents to retirees. Good service. Also, on return, there is a key drop in the terminal that will allow you to keep the car until your flight out.

Look into Charter US, which is (was?) located on the base in the old lodging area to rent Hertz vehicles from:

Annemarie Collins has never done us wrong on 3 trips to Germany. Just make sure that you check their hours of operation and try to schedule around when you arrive Ramstein. Since we had reserved a car ahead of time, Space A flights were not cooperative, so had to make 3 or 4 adjustments during our wait for a flight, and each time, Hertz acknowledged my calls and emails. They seem to be one of the only places on the main base at Ramstein that will allow you to rent on base.
Sincerely,
Ted_M

Unless I have missed something, the procedure at the Ramstein Inn is for retirees to be driven to the village, processed and given a rental car. This is the way it was last Fall.

Johanna,

Technically this is probably true. In the past, retirees renting cars were driven to a rental office in Ramstein village to process paperwork and pick up a car.

We need to go to Schinnen, the Netherlands from Ramstein and about 3 years ago when we inquired they told us at Ramstein that retirees could not rent a car from Ramstein period. Some car rental agencies and even a train ticket are very pricy. Any other solutions or suggestions? Thanks

JAK 777:

True, but didn't mean that she had to turn the car in on base! The point is to save money by not turning it in in the Netherlands!

You may have a problem with Geilenkirchen ... usually they will only admit NATO ID cardholders.

johanna:

One-way rentals from Germany to another country will be very expensive. Suggest you look into renting from Ramstein Village (Annamarie/Hertz) to turn car in at Geilenkirchen (about five miles across border (back in Germany) from Schinnen.

Happy travels, John

Does anybody know where to rent a car from Ramstein to Schinnen, (one way) the Netherlands for RETIREES. Some years back retirees were not allowed to rent cars from Ramstein period. Any other suggestions since other car rental agencies and the train are rediculously expensive. Thanks
