The fastest train from Landstuhl to Mainz is the one that goes through Bad Munster. It usually runs once each hour. The connections are tight at Bad Munster, you only have 3 or 4 minutes but you won't have to switch more than to the adjacent platform if that. The last time I made the trip, it was less than 2 hrs from Landstuhl to Mainz on the Ban Munster train. Connections at Kaiserslautern are a bit more generous.

Also the fare is better...... (22E if you use the automat) If this is your first time, go to the ticket office and have the person print you up an itinerary so you can see the train numbers. Then once you have found the correct platform, look at the yellow sheets posted (Abfarht) and see what the FINAL DESTINATION is for the train that you're taking. That way you can know if the approaching train is the one you want to hop on.

John D.

I'm not looking at the moment. My next trip from Ramstein will probably be to Vienna -- no flights from Hahn. But, sooner or later, I'll be heading somewhere out of Hahn. Your advice is awesome and always welcome.

Irwin,

If you're looking for the directions from Ramstein to Frnakfurt-Hahn then they are outlined at Spacea.net's Ramstein Page.

I've gone BWI and Andrews to Ramstein twice each -- arrival is in mid-morning, but by the time we sat through the customs clearance speech, cleared customs, etc., it was well past 1000.
And I've used the FRA bus twice. Whether it makes sense or not, it leaves on time. So, do not count on a same day connection. Anyway, if you are going to Frankfurt HAHN, the 1000 terminal bus goes to Frankfurt am MAIN. There is a bus between airports from Main to Hahn. The commercial bus -- the famous A6 Shell Station stop -- to Hahn was very convenient but sadly is out of business. According to a past thread (you can search for it under Ground Transportation), you can take the train from Landstuhl to Mainz and transfer to a bus (Number 600?) to Hahn airport. It's slow, but the quickest option among train to bus or bus to bus connections. Your other options are shuttles or taxis from the base to Hahn, and these cost, I recall 75 euros and up.

I suspect the bus is there for duty pax stationed at RMS to travel to/from FRA airport versus to accommodate duty pax arriving on the Pat-ex.

I would think the majority of duty pax arriving on the Pat-ex are either staying at Ramstein of traveling on via ground versus continuing on to FRA to catch another flight.

John:

Youi can figure this out by adding six hours to the t/o time from Andrews/BWI to establish what time it is in Germany. Then add eight+/- hours for travel/clear customs time. So unless your t/o time is earlier than 2000, you won't make it for a 1000 bus.

"It would sort of make sense for that bus to wait... " Really? Don't think it ever works that way.

Happy travels, John

I hope to catch a flight soon from either Andrews or BWI to Ramstein. These flights normally have a mid-evening show time and depart in late evening. I hope to arrive the next morning in time to catch the bus from Ramstein to Frankfurt in order to get to Hahn in time for a flight.
So the question is: does the Ramstein flight from BWI or Andrews arrive in time to catch the Frankfurt bus scheduled to depart at 1000? It would sort of make sense for that bus to wait for passengers from the arriving contract flight from BWI.
John
