If you are actually headed up to the airport, don't forget about the Kitsap Shuttle that goes right from the terminal to the airport. There really is nothing much outside the gate at McChord, unless someone is picking you up. A taxi cost me $20 to go the 4 miles or so to the 512 park and ride one time. Fort Lewis is about $25. (The rates are much like the rates at Dover, but that is another thread). |

I'll be travelling with 2 small children by myself, so it looks like the cab will be our best bet. Thanks for the info! |

Mari, If you check Spacea.net's McChord AFB Wiki Page you'll find links to Google maps showing the locations William described below as well as links to the Pierce Transit bus #300 bus schedules. |

I've lived near McChord for ten years. They have never had an on-base shuttle. For a short time, Pierce County Transit extended their bus route toward billeting and the pax terminal, but that is no longer. The bus now comes onbase, via Bridgeport, and go the other direction to the BX/Comm complex. To walk to the main gate on Bridgeport, put the pax terminal at your back, walk diagonally, to the right, across the parking lot, follow the access road untill you hit a "T" intersection (about 200 yds). This is the main drag through, and around the base. Turn left, and follow the road for about a 1.6 miles. The route makes a big half loop a quarterway around the base. At the second stop light, turn right, and proceed about a quarter of a mile to the Bridgeport gate. Enroute, you will walk past the billeting office and combined club. If you know where you are heading it's possible to shave about a quarter mile off the walk by taking diagonal shortcuts across parking lots, etc. Except for the shotcuts, your will find sidewalks nearly all the way to Bridgeport Way. If you want to catch the Pierce Transit bus #300 headed off base to Tacoma Mall, walk through the second light, and you will see a bus shelter on your left. During weekdays, the bus runs every 30 min; less on weekends, and not at all from the early evening to early morning. The new fares are .75 to $1.75, depending on your age. For taxi, call Ft Lewis Taxi company, 253-582-3000, fares are metered. To the main gate, it will run about $10. If it's raining hard, call a cab. If it's a work day, and you are bag dragging, walk with your back to the traffic and some kind person may stop and offer you a lift. It's worked for me about 50% of the time. |

Does anyone know how to get from the terminal at McChord to the main gate? I heard that the shuttle no longer runs there and the terminal is a couple miles from anything else. If a taxi is the only option, do you know how much it would cost for 3 people? Thanks! |
