We took the train to Melbourne (10 hours) at night. You can get a sleeper, although we didn't, sleeping in our seats. The also have a morning trip. When we got ready to return we did the same in reverse.

We stay at the Coach House Inn, across the Richmond RAAF field. They may come get you at the RAAF Base.

There is a train stop near the Inn at Clarendon. 1+ hr. to Sydney...The Sr. Train fare is really cheap, if you can get it; for all day, all modes (ferry/train) in Sydney.

90% of the Space A flights are into RAAF Richmond. Most SPATs take a taxi from the PAX terminal into either Richmond or Windsor, withdraw Aussie dollars at the ATM, pay the driver and then walk over to the train station. I think it's a 90 minute ride into downtown Sydney.

The other "landing city" you are seeing is most likely Alice Springs, in the Outback. Sometimes the plane that brings SPATs into Richmond continues on to Alice the following morning. There are actually city buses which run between the Alice Airport and downtown, and taxis are also available. If you want to go from Alice to other AUS cities, you can fly commercial or take a long bus ride.

When I was there on a sailing vacation a few years back, the booking agent recommended to me the local bus lines to get from the airport to the hotel. The buses were a great surprise - much nicer, cleaner, and comfortable than American buses. I would take the bus again if I were there.
